GENERAL EMBROIDERY, PANEL
This panel made for a ladys coat is an exquisite example of the finest Chinese hand embroidery, silk on cotton 20th C. It would have been made by the Miao of Huangping, Guizhou, China as part of a festival jacket for the 'coming of age' ceremony for a teenage girl.
Tiny chain stitches outline the colourful small shapes of petaled flowers and ram’s horns, worked in satin and straight stitches. The embroidery is worked on a band of indigo dyed cotton fabric with black cotton strips attached to each side.
Cuff is not made up: was part of an exhibition of Chinese Tribal handwork brought out from China and held at PICA, Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, in 1997. Purchased by the donor for her textile collection and later gifted to the Guild.
