World War 1, Europe England, 1917
1917Postcard of Rising Sun badge on hillside near Fovant Camp in England
During the Great War of 1914-18, Fovant, along with nearby villages, became the site for a very large military camp. Built at the foot of our Downs, an endless array of huts housed large numbers of soldiers. These men, though mainly in transit, still found time to carve their regimental badges on the Downs. The effect of their presence on the village was immense and lasting.
