Grave marker of four soldiers, including 1172 Private Richard Sydney Roberts, 11 Battalion AIF, died of wounds 21 June 1915.

Historical information

1172 Private Richard Sydney Roberts of Kayanaba Station, Dandaragon enlisted on 22 September 1914 and emnarked from Melbourne on HMAT A 32 Themistocles on 22 December 1914 with 1st Reinforcements, 11 Battalion. On arrival in Egypt, they were quickly embarked for the Dardanelles and landed at Gallipoli as reinforcements.
It was here, in May 1915, that Richard was badly wounded and placed aboard the HMT Dongala, then later transferred to 18 General Hospital, Alexandria.
In June, he went to England aboard HMHS Nevada. It was later that Richard was to suddenly die in the Birmingham Hospital, England.
He died heart failure resulting from wounds on 21 June 1915 and is buried in Birmingham (Lodge Hill) Cemetery Warwichkshire, England.
