From the Collection #6 - International Women's Day 2022

Overview

Part of the "From the Collection" series prepared and distributed to a subscribers' list during 2022 as a follow on to the "Virtual Visit" series initiated during the COVID lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 The collection focus of collection items highlighted for International Women's Day, 9 March 2022.

Historical information

In the development of our museum galleries, an early decision was to provide an integrated experience. As far as practical, the presentation would be chronological with no individual galleries devoted to a specific corps (Artillery, Engineers, Signals etc). This meant that the stories of women in the Australian Army which until recent decades had been restricted to women’s only services (eg Australian Women’s Army Corps) or specialised functions like nursing would be highlighted within the broader scope of the Australian Army in Western Australia and Western Australians in the Australian Army.

Contextual Information

Typically only a small portion of a museum collection is exhibited at any one time. This is due not only to practical consideration of display space but a range of professional considerations designed to protect and preserve the artefact. This series highlights objects and stories you may have overlooked in the galleries or collection items awaiting the opportunity to be viewed and share their story.
