"Irene O'Meara (nee Digney)
(1903-2000)
She was the first lay Nurse employed by the Sisters of Mercy for St Anne's Nursing Home. She was trained in Fremantle Hospital and KEMH. She took charge of the Midwifery section of the Hospital in 1938 to fill in for Sr Gertrude Willoughby who was preparing for Final Profession. Irene continued working in the Hospital after she was married. Her children were born at St Anne's.
Sr Rene O'Meara, as she was known was outstanding in her ability to take over the new maternity section. She was dedicated and an example of one who quickly absorbed the values and philosophy of a Catholic Maternity Hospital. Irene Digney died on April 6 2000- aged 97 years."
