PHOTOGRAPH: EMPIRE DAY CELEBRATIONS, SUBIACO OVAL
1914The black and white photograph shows an outdoor celebration around the raising of the Australian flag. The photograph is taken from the grandstand, where several women are seated to observe the proceedings. Other spectators sit on benches on the area of grass between the grandstand and the oval. There are several perambulators in this area. On the oval is a large group of school children, flanked by some teachers. Small flags stuck in the ground, presumably indicate class positions. One individual bears the Union Jack and the Australian flag flies from a pole. A few spectators can be seen behind the picket fence on the far side of the oval. A scoreboard reads, "Subiaco" and "West Perth". Beyond the oval are the houses of Roberts Road, and rooftops of further Subiaco properties beyond them. The words "Empire Day Celebrations 1914" are printed along the bottom of the photograph.
