Overview

Avon Location 5781. The first attempt at constructing an Interceptor bank on the upper slopes. Despite all the attempts to compact the soil over the gully, the waterlogging did a far more efficient effect. My father had told me many years ago that the way to correct the problems of the soil was to 'build cement walls around the hilltops and hold the water where it falls'. At that time I couldn't afford the cement, I had to use the material that was on site. Starting at the top was not easy. I had to learn about catchments, recharge areas, throughflows (natural subsurface drainage lines), seepages, discharges, false caps, impermeable layers, reconstructed soils and to distinguish between those soils that would hold and seal and those that would not. The terraces of China and the absorption and Interceptor banks successfully used in America on the Tennessee Valley all had some useful lessons. There was an answer, it was a matter of understanding the soils we have to work with. The success of these early banks built in the upper slopes gave me the encouragement to go further.
