PHOTOGRAPH: SHANE PICKETT BANNER PAINTING STUDIO FOR ROKEBY ROAD 1996

1996
Overview

Coloured photograph of the process for painting a series of banners designed by artist Shane Pickett. The art was commissioned by the Subiaco City Council and the contract was signed by Shane Pickett at Council Meeting 9 in June 1996.
Some of the banners are in situ on Rokeby Road.

Historical information

Shane Pickett was commissioned in 1996, by the Council of Subiaco to produce 16 street banners for Aboriginal Reconciliation week in 1997 as a Public Art Project. Some banners were produced in duplicate, to be hung side-by-side along Rokeby Road: Frogs, Kangaroos and Tree Kangaroos (possibly more). From the process of making the banners, captured in images P97.15a-q, it appears that there were nine designs. Three designs have not been sighted, for inclusion in the Museum's art collection: Black Swans, Female figure and blue/mustard Echnidnas. Of the banners that are now accessioned into the Museum's art collection (since 2012), six designs are represented, with Frogs, Kangaroos and Tree Kangaroos having duplicates = nine banners in total.
