Part of the "From the Collection" series prepared and distributed to a subscribers' list during 2022 as a follow on to the "Virtual Visit" series initiated during the COVID lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 The collection focus of this item are the medals of the Royal Humane Society and the Royal Humane Society of Australasia
The Museum has two Humane Society medals in its collection. The first was awarded to Herbert Bailey, Lands Department, Perth, aged 27 who risked his life in rescuing George Bickford Moysey, aged 35, and Tom Hemmant, aged 31, both of Subiaco, from drowning, at The Basin, Rottnest Island, on, February 18, 1910. Several men were swimming, when the current took them out from the shore. Moysey and Hemmant were in difficulties, when Bailey plunged in and swam to their assistance. He brought Hemmant to the shore and then returned for Moysey, who was sinking. After a struggle Bailey rescued Moysey, but was himself very much exhausted

Typically only a small portion of a museum collection is exhibited at any one time. This is due not only to practical consideration of display space, but a range of professional considerations designed to protect and preserve the artefact. This series highlights objects and stories you may have overlooked in the galleries or collection items awaiting the opportunity to be viewed and share their story.
