Virtual Discovery #6 - Rottnest telephone Cable 1938

Overview

Part of a series of “Virtual Discovery” presentations featuring the military heritage of Rottnest island produced in parallel with Virtual Visit posts relating to the Australian Army Museum of Western Australia. This “Virtual Discovery” focuses on the Submarine telephone cable laid to Rottnest in 1936.

Historical information

On 18 December 1936, 10 ½ miles of submarine cable for the new Postmaster General telephone link to Rottnest were loaded into a barge from the Cable Ship Faraday. This cable replaced the original cable laid in 1902 which, in turn had superseded the previous heliograph link.
