On October 20th, 1917, the British passenger/cargo ship IONIAN, built in 1901 by Workman, Clark & Co. Ltd. and owned at the time of her loss by Canadian Pacific Steamships, on voyage from Liverpool to Plymouth in ballast, was sunk by a mine laid by the German submarine UC-51. 7 people lost their lives.
