From the Collection #44 - Convoys Through Fremantle Port

Overview

Part of the "From the Collection" series prepared and distributed to a subscribers' list during 2022 as a follow on to the "Virtual Visit" series initiated during the COVID lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 The collection focus of this item is the departure and return of troop convoys from Fremantle Port

Historical information

While the main convoy of the Australian Imperial Force assembled and departed Australia from King George’s Sound in Albany on 1 November 1914, the first Western Australian units, departed from Fremantle. The continued existence of German warships and raiders meant that these departures were not publicly announced. They were nevertheless highly visible events due to public awareness and relatively open access to the ports and roadstead visibility. The destruction of the SMS Emden on Cocos Island by HMAS Sydney, on 9 November 1914, meant that subsequent troop departures were highly public events filled with emotion.

Contextual Information

Typically only a small portion of a museum collection is exhibited at any one time. This is due not only to practical consideration of display space, but a range of professional considerations designed to protect and preserve the artefact. This series highlights objects and stories you may have overlooked in the galleries or collection items awaiting the opportunity to be viewed and share their story.
