Oral history kit : Shelley Spicer and Lesley Flaherty 2016
2016Shelley Spicer (nee Griffiths) and Lesley Flaherty (nee Griffiths) are two of the children of Thomas (Tom) Griffiths and Roma Griffiths (nee Dunlop). Tom and Roma Griffiths opened and ran the Griffiths Hardware store, located on Albany Highway, Gosnells, in the 1950s-1960s. They did not exclusively deal with hardware but also housewares, paint, tools, toys, whitegoods and many other different items. An extension to the original store was opened in the early 1960s. Shelley and Lesley discuss an opening event for this extension in which both staff and clients were invited. A second store was also opened in Kelmscott in the early 1960s but this was only run for a few years. Other points of interest include memories of the hardware store and the people who were worked there. Shelley and Lesley also discuss their father's military service and how their parents met while Mr Griffiths was stationed in the Eastern States. They also detail the chicken farm their parents ran in Gosnells following the war and both Mr and Mrs Griffith's business's following the sale of the hardware store which included a car business and a fashion agency.
