World War 1, Sweetheart Souvenir Parcel from Ypres, LONGMORE / SUTTON, 1918

Overview

Souvenir packet from the Western Front sent by 1974 Private William James Longmore, 11 Battalion, to fiancée Miss Gladys Amy Sutton, 36 Rowden Road, Beckenham, Kent. England. Packet contained a lace bordered silk table centrepiece and a bakerite locket with his photo. The table centrepiece features a painted pre-war image of the Cloth Hall (augmented with flames above embroidered "Souvenir d Ypres" and augmented in the corners with embroidered and applique flowers. The hinged oval locket has places for two images but only contains that of Private Longmore. The shipping envelope is a hand sewn khaki cotton bag.

Historical information

1974 Private William James Longmore of 11 Battalion AIF was killed in action on 24 April 1918 and is buried in Meteren Military Cemetery, Pas du Calais, France
