The Australian Army Nursing Service was formed in 1902. Records indicate that 2139 Australian served abroad with the Australian Army Nursing Service and 423 served in Australia. Twenty-five died and 388 were decorated . Sister Shackell was awarded 2nd Class, Royal Red Cross for her service during World War 1.
