Overview

The effect of the hardpan becoming close to the surface. Location Brookton townsite. The hardpan is so close to the surface, these trees were unsafe. The rising hardpan had strangled the taproot of the trees. To live the tree had sent out lateral roots to find nutrients and moisture just beneath the surface and above the hardpan. On farm lands or bush land, when the hardpan has the same effect on trees, only it appears to be a 'salt scald', the tree usually falls over during a wind, the lateral roots appear around the base of the tree as they are in this photo, but in the 'salt scald' the roots remaining in the soil on the bottom usually can gather enough moisture and nutrients to live-on and in doing so will send-up vertical shoots from the horizontal trunk. 'Salt' is not the killer, the hardpan is the criminal to beware of.
