Virtual Discovery #1 - Building Bickley Battery

Overview

Part of a series of “Virtual Discovery” presentations featuring the military heritage of Rottnest island produced in parallel with Virtual Visit posts relating to the Australian Army Museum of Western Australia. This “Virtual Discovery” focusses on installing the guns at Bickley battery

Historical information

The barrel of a 6 inch Mark XI coast artillery gun weighed just over 7,600 kilos and so a tripod together with the mechanical advantage of a block and tackle were necessary to lift and position the barrel. The windlass and ratchets allowed the barrel to be raised gradually and held in place between rotations.
