Overview

Part of the "From the Collection" series prepared and distributed to a subscribers' list during 2022 as a follow on to the "Virtual Visit" series initiated during the COVID lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 The collection focus of this item is the Armistice on 24 May 1915 at Gallipoli.

Historical information

Photos of the Armistice activities were taken by Colonel Charles Snodgrass Ryan who at the time was Assistant Director of Medical Services of 1 Division AIF. He had served as a surgeon with the Turkish Army 1876 in the final stages of the Turko-Servian war and then in the Russo-Turkish campaign of
1877-78 including the siege of Plevna. For his war services he was decorated with the Turkish orders of the Osmanieh and the Medjidie and the War medal. He was wearing these medals on 24 May, a probable factor in his ability to photograph the activity. http://www.honesthistory.net.au/wp/wp-content/upload

Contextual Information

Typically only a small portion of a museum collection is exhibited at any one time. This is due not only to practical consideration of display space but a range of professional considerations designed to protect and preserve the artefact. This series highlights objects and stories you may have overlooked in the galleries or collection items awaiting the opportunity to be viewed and share their story.
