Site of the Foundation of Perth in 1979 Tapestry
Framed tapestry depicting Site of the Foundation of Perth in 1979
Prior to 1978, two tapestries hung in the CWA Boardroom, the tapestry completed for the 1969 Conference display depicting the foundation ceremony of Perth in 1829 and the second depicted the same site in Perth 150 years later.
This latter tapestry, which included the Town Hall and Treasury buildings as focal points, was worked from a colour slide taken by a nephew of Joan Halse, which was projected onto the canvas, fixed to a wall and the main outlines pencilled in.
The wools then had to be matched with the actual buildings. One Saturday afternoon Lilian Higgins, Doll Doust and Joan Halse took up position in Barrack Street and armed with a selection of wools chose the colours required. Lilian Higgins worked this second tapestry and used native birds for the border instead of wildflowers depicted in the first tapestry.
