'Notes from conversation between Joanna Sassoon (161 Heytesbury Road) and Peter Norgard (longtime resident of 159 Heytesbury Road) 9 February 2022 about the Max Williams Nobel ammunition box.
Peter met Max Williams in about 1970. They had common interests in racing cars and speedboats. Max was living at the time in Keighley Road (Peter grew up in Arthur Street before moving with his family to Nedlands, and returning to Subiaco in around 1960 when he purchased 159 Heytesbury Road). Max was running the gun shop, at this point in Rokeby Board and it backed into Falls Landrover Shop. He rented the top floor of a new building in Rokeby Road. He was a gunsmith, sold, repaired, and sold ammunition. Unlike some of the gunshops he did not favour any particular gun club and was not a member of any - he kept neutral and interested in all of the various gun clubs.
Peter was a competitive shooter and went to Max for supplies. Max had a variety of customers including the Sultain of Brunei and his security guards. Max was a stonemason by trade and Peter thinks he came from Albany.
Max had 2 sons - Lee (girl), and sons John and Steven. Max died about 5 years ago, Steven was at his father's funeral but John was ill at the time
Max's business was known as Max Williams Custom Guns. Max was known as one of the better gunsmiths in Perth. He was the gunsmith, he employed others but he held the license. His wife Phyllis was in the shop - she ran the counter and Max ran the workshop. In the 1970's it was not out of character for Subiaco to have a gunships shop. But attitudes to guns have changed and licenses have become expensive. The gun owners that Peter know in the 1970's were competitive rifle, shotgun and pistol shooters. Max also had country clients.
The box - shotgun ammunition came from Melbourne. Max was originally going to chuck out the box. Peter thought it too good to chuck out. He kept it in his shed and stored bits and pieces in it. Then, in the 2021, in the last Subiaco Council 'bring out your dead' free verge collection, Peter chucked it out. Joanna thought it too good to chuck out and rescued it for the Subiaco Museum.'
