Historical information

The Australian Army Museum of Western Australia has an extensive collection of photographs, instruments and regalia relating to the brass bands which existed within units and formations in the State from pre-Federation until 1974. In technical terms, brass bands utilise only brass instruments, while military or wind bands also have woodwind instruments (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and saxophones). Brass bands were the norm in Western Australian military units in peace and war, at home and overseas and during both World Wars.

Contextual Information

Typically only a small portion of a museum collection is exhibited at any one time. This is due not only to practical consideration of display space but a range of professional considerations designed to protect and preserve the artefact. This series highlights objects and stories you may have overlooked in the galleries or collection items awaiting the opportunity to be viewed and share their story.
