CARRIAGE LAMP: CANDLE POWERED TO STAND IN SUPPORTS ON SIDE OF CARRIAGE
c. 1900Rectangular metal box with a hollow extension below and a double chimney above. The hollow extension fits a copper tube enclosing a cloth covered spring which ends in a type of candle holder. The spring keeps the candle firm and pushed upwards into the lamp. The chimney rises from the box hollow and having two sets of holes for the escape of heat. Each set is surmounted by a circular cover, one above the other. Both extension and chimney have been painted with black enamel paint over rust and dirt. The rectangular box, or lamp proper, has one side of clear, bevelled glass, one side reflecting metal, one side a hinged door for tending the lamp. This door opens downward and has a circular red glass window surrounded by brass. This would have been visible from the rear. The opposite side to this has a large, oval, bevelled glass window surrounded by an outwardly flaring brass frame. This would have faced the front of the carriage. Glass has a semi-circular crack.
