Historical information

Lillian Coomer of Wongan Hills was a staff nurse at Perth General Hospital when she enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Service on 12 August 1915. She embarked at Sydney on RMS Kashgan on 12 Aug 1915. She served in France with 2 Australian General Hospital and was promoted Sister on 10 December 1918. She returned to Australia on RMS Ormonde on 19 June 1919. Married name – White – no further details.

Her brother was 792 Francis John Coomer, 12 Battalion, G Company. He was promoted 2/Lieutenant on 30 September 1916 and attached to 13 Light Trench Mortar battery. He was accidentally killed at 2nd Army Grenade School and is buried at Hazebrouck Communal Cemetery.

Lillian Coomer was born in Perth in 1888 and was living in Wongan Hills when she enlisted with the Australian Army Nursing Service in 1915. She served in France and was promoted to Sister in 1918. Her brothers, Douglas and Jack who were both killed during the War. Lillian was an avid photographer and her extensive collection is housed in the Museum.
