BSHS 1986 Head Girl - Mandy Miller

Prefect elections of 1986 — and a nervous contingent of Year Eleven's are making the final adjustments to their speeches which are filled with promises, words of wisdom and many pleadings.
Of course, only ten Year Eleven's will be able to represent the school in 1987, which is a great responsibility. Why then, are so many so eager for the role?
Mandy Miller, Bunbury Senior High School's Head Girl, explains, "Unfortunately, the majority of students don't realize the amount of effort and the type of work that is involved in being a prefect. For example, on Saturday mornings we help the Red Cross Society in their ventures. This type of activity upholds the value of the school in the eyes of the community. This year the prefects have obtained bike racks for the students — unfortunately, very few students realize they were the results of the prefects efforts."
"Also, a lot of students take the organization of the socials and the ball for granted and are not aware of the amount of planning and organization involved."
"Perhaps some students are under the impression that being a prefect just involves receiving many privileges without having to work for them. However, while prefects do receive invitations to various functions, they have the responsibility of being the official school representatives and as such are constantly in the eyes of the public."
"People's idea of our school depend on our prefects. A good prefect, essentially, has to WANT to help people. You should be able to communicate well and be on good terms with all teachers and students alike. Also, a good prefect must be organized enough to be able to fit in your prefect responsibilities as well as your required study time to keep up school grades."
"In recent years the school has had a student council which is comprised of students from each year group. I think this should continue because in this way the students have more of a say in the day to day running of the school. So overall the representation of the students is well catered for through the prefects and this will, hopefully, continue.
