Red Tail Cockatoo
2009A red tailed cockatoo stretches its tail out while looking over the farm land. Artist Statement "This oil painting is symbollic of the loss of habitat from most of our native species. I have focused on the red tailed cickatoo for this piece. The female red tail is shown next to her nest and the only food that she will consume is the nuts from a marri tree while the male red tail (shown below her in the middle distance) searches for a new tree. While on the horizon the town expands into farmland wiping out more habitats and possibly the future of the red tail and many assiciated species." Judges Comments "… is a view over a well-manicured pastoral landscape from the nesting holes of a cockatoo. The remarkable birds are slowly being driven to extinction by the clearance of the old trees in which these holes form. The bird on the left is remarkably well observed and the detail of its plumage is balanced against the need to provide an overall set of continuous lines so as to suggest a living creature. The light across the cloudy bright blue sky and the details of distant foliage are remarkably well observed and constructed in paint. This is an excellent example of the ability of conventional figurative art to lay out the contradictions of human aspiration and the theme of the harmonies of nature." -David Bromfield
