PHOTOGRAPH: TIGHE'S GENERAL STORE
c. 1905The sepia photograph shows Tighe's General Store on the corner of Rokeby and Barker Roads, where the liquor store stands now. It is a two storey building. The upper storey has a verandah with an ornate iron balustrade around it. It features a large group of people standing on the pavement, with children sitting on the kerb. A horse and cart stands further uphill, to the left of the image, the horse facing downhill. Distinguishable on the side of the cart: 'Fry Cocoa'. Advertising featured above the shop: 'Robinson's Patent Groats and Barley. Try Fry's Malted Cocoa'. At the very top of the building is an inscription on the roof: 'Tighe's Building AD 1905.' It could be opening day.
