Vitrual discovery #8 - Legend of Saint Barbara
Part of a series of “Virtual Discovery” presentations featuring the military heritage of Rottnest island produced in parallel with Virtual Visit posts relating to the Australian Army Museum of Western Australia. This “Virtual Discovery” focuses on Saint Barbara patron saint of gunners, sappers and miners and those who work with explosives.
St Barbara is the patron Saint of gunners, sappers and miners and those who work with explosives. Her feast day of 4 December is widely celebrated by these groups and remains a recognised Saint’s Day in the Orthodox tradition. There is a statue of St Barbara in Kalgoorlie. Part of the legend is that her executioner was struck by a bolt of lightning before he could do his task.
