From the Collection #42 - Mother's, Widow's and Female Relative's Badges
Part of the "From the Collection" series prepared and distributed to a subscribers' list during 2022 as a follow on to the "Virtual Visit" series initiated during the COVID lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 The collection focus of this item are the Mother's, Widow's and Female Relative's Badges from World war 1 and World war 2.
Australia has issued a range of badges and insignia to female relations and next of kin to acknowledge death due to or participation in war service. In most cases, these badges although individually numbered were not named. A major research effort is underway at the Army Museum to identify the original recipient of these awards from the registers of issue. The numbers of many badges were not recorded on donation and items were segregated by type. The broader project is to attempt to reunite identity discs, badges, including Ex-Service Association insignia, with the relevant medal group
to enable a comprehensive story of service and the impact of service to be told.

Typically only a small portion of a museum collection is exhibited at any one time. This is due not only to practical consideration of display space, but a range of professional considerations designed to protect and preserve the artefact. This series highlights objects and stories you may have overlooked in the galleries or collection items awaiting the opportunity to be viewed and share their story.
