Historical information

Major Eileen Kenny was appointed to the Australian Army Nursing Reserve on 20 February 1939. On the outbreak of World War 2 in September, she was one of the first to volunteer for service. In the rank of Sister, she was designated as Sister-in-Charge of a special unit of the Australian Army Nursing Service which embarked on 31 May 1940 for England where she assumed the duties of Theatre-Sister of 3 Australian general Hospital. In May 19141 she was posted to 11 Australian General Hospital in Alexandria dealing with enemy air attack and the numerous casualties from the Western desert, Greece and Crete. She returned to Queensland with 11 General Hospital to treat casualties from New Guinea. On 17 April 1943, she was appointed Principal Matron Western Australia. For her dedication, excellence of service and professional abilities she was awarded the honour of the Australian Red Cross (First Class)

She married Flight Lieutenant Charles Jobert on 10 May 1945
