Memorial Cross, A Snellman, Cachy Wood

Historical information

3743 Alexander Snellman of Brisbane enlisted on 9 October 1917 and embarked from Sydney on HMAT A14 Euripides on 31 October 1917 as part of 10th Reinforcements, 52 Battalion. He was killed in action on 24 April 1918 near Villers Bretonneux His service records indicate that he was buried with others of his unit 100 yards west of Villers-Bretonneux. Subsequently a memorial cross was erected near Cachy, south-east of Amiens. The gravesite was subsequently lost and his service is commemorated at the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux.
