1985
Overview

Coloured photograph of a house at 139 Coghlan Road. The house is made of red brick. The roof is grey. There is a smaller decorative garble at one corner of the house. This garble has been partially concealed by a semi/circular sign reading 'W.A.EPILEPSY ASSN' in blue letters. Two larger garbles are seen to the left and to the right in the image, but are partially covered by trees. The house has one red and white brick chimney. There is a bull nosed verandah with a grey tin roof. The wooden beams supporting the roof of the verandah are painted white. A white sign with red letters is placed under the roof of the verandah. The sign reads 'BINGO FRIDAY 15 22'. The window casings, rails and sills are also painted white. There is a low, red brick wall with a light grey metal gate in front of the house. There are trees in front of the house, to the left and to the right in the image. There is a small bush to the right of the gate of the brick wall.

Reverse: Written on the reverse in pencil 'CNR BAGOT & COGHLAN' and in blue pen '14/6/217/4'

Historical information

From a series of photographs taken by Ian Molyneux for the National Estate Survey of Subiaco in 1985.

The house was constructed in 1904.

The documentary evidence indicates that this place was constructed in late 1904 by the owner, Robert William Prior Gulley – who was a local builder/contractor. Based on the external, street front inspection, this may have originally been designed as a smaller corner villa (extended in a similar style to the west at a later date). Newspaper advertisements indicate that the house was sub-divided into bed sitting rooms/flats around 1953. The next major change took place in 1965 when the old house was adapted as the headquarters of the Western Australian Epilepsy Association. It was at this time that the place was named Ruby Hutchison House, in honour of Ruby Florence Hutchison (1892-1974). In July 1963, it was Ruby who called the first meeting of the W.A. Epilepsy Association and she is acknowledged as the founder and inaugural president of this organisation. The Association remained here until June 2002 when the headquarters were relocated to Nedlands. Since that time the place has returned to its original use as a residence.
