Contextual Information

In late February and March 1944 there was a major invasion scare in Western Australia, when based on sightings by submarine piquets in the Sunda Straits, it was feared that a Japanese task force might be approaching Fremantle behind a cyclonic front. Submarines and their support were moved from Fremantle to Albany and additional air resources flow to Western Australia. In spite of air alerts sounding in Perth, no threat eventuated.
