The Australian Army was actively involved in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2021, participating in various operations aimed at combating terrorism and supporting the reconstruction of the country. Operation Slipper (2001–2014) marked Australia's initial commitment to the war in Afghanistan following the September 11 attacks. It involved deploying over 39,000 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel throughout the conflict, with a peak deployment of around 1,100 troops in 2002.
Following the conclusion of Operation Slipper, Australia continued its involvement through Operation Highroad (2015-2021) which supported NATO's Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan. Australian troops were first deployed in October 2001, with special forces playing a significant role in the early stages of the conflict, including the establishment of Forward Operating Bases. Over the years, the ADF's presence expanded to include infantry units, engineers, and aviation assets, with troop numbers peaking at around 1,550 in mid-2009. Most Australian troops were withdrawn by 2020, with the last combat troops leaving Uruzgan Province in December 2013. However, a small number remained in training and support roles until the final withdrawal in 2021.
Australian forces participated in combat operations, provided training and support to Afghan security forces, and engaged in reconstruction efforts. The ADF's main focus was in Uruzgan Province, where they worked alongside coalition forces to disrupt Taliban operations and build the capacity of Afghan security forces.
Over 40 Australians lost their lives and 263 were wounded during this conflict.
