1915Postcard of HMAT 68 "Anchises" from 2634 Private George McGillis, 12 Battalion AIF, Killed in Action 25 July 1916
HMAT A78 Anchises was owned by the Ocean SS Co Ltd, Liverpool (Blue Funnel Line). While managed by the Transport Branch of the Royal Australian Navy she made five journeys from Australia as a troop ship. Commonwealth control ceased on 12 Oct 1917 when her management transferred to the British Admiralty.
2634 Private George Patrick Joseph McGillis of Beverley enlisted on 22 June 1915. He embarked on 2 September 1915 as part of 12 Battalion 8th Reinforcements. Killed in action on 25 July 1916 and commemorated at Pozieres British Cemetery.
