Overview

Small rectangular aluminium tobacco tin that would have been hinged. The lid is engraved with 'WX11151 A.R. HOME' and has an additional piece of aluminium attached depicting the colour patch of the 2/13th Australian General Hospital and has signs of being coloured.

Historical information

This small rectangular aluminium tobacco tin was made by an unknown soldier and given to Major Arthur Robinson Home during their internment as prisoners of war (POW) of the Japanese at Changi Camp, Singapore. This tin is engraved and bears the name of Major Home who was Registrar of the 2/13th Australian General Hospital.

Contextual Information

Dr Arthur Robinson Home was a local medical practitioner in Albany, Western Australia and member of the militia attached to the Princess Royal Fortress prior to the Second World War. He served on the Albany Town Council from 1936 to 1939 during the time helping to convert the town’s electricity from DC (Direct Current) to AC (Alternating Current). He was the Albany Port Medical Officer for 42 years, and worked at the State Quarantine Office at Quaranup. Home was Registrar of the 2/13th Australian General Hospital at the Fall of Singapore
